Dune (1984) [HD DVD]

by Frederick Elmes

Even more than most of David Lynch's deliberately bizarre and idiosyncratic movies, Dune is a "love-it-or-hate-it" affair. An ambitious, epic, utterly mind-boggling--and, let's admit it, all-out weird--adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel, Dune remains one of the most controversial films in the director's exceedingly provocative career. The story (if Dune can be said to have just one story) is complex and convoluted in the epic tradition; it has something to do with political intrigue and a planet that is home to a precious spice and gigantic sand worms. Think Shakespeare's Henry IV with a dash of Tremors, and set in another galaxy. But despite plenty of strangely whispered voice-overs that explain the characters' thoughts (and endlessly detailed exposition), storytelling is not really among the film's strong points. There are, however, a lot of memorably fantastic/grotesque images, an extraordinary cast, and a soundtrack featuring Toto. I told you it was weird. Among the stars are Kyle MacLachlan, José Ferrer, Dean Stockwell, Brad Dourif, Sting, Kenneth McMillan, Patrick Stewart, Sean Young, and Linda Hunt. --Jim Emerson

Storytelling

by Frederick Elmes

Todd Solondz, director of the acclaimed Welcome to the Dollhouse and the controversial Happiness, continues pushing the envelope of social decorum with the merciless and casually cruel Storytelling, his most ruthless satire of suburban complacency. Broken into two unrelated chapters, "Fiction" follows college girl Selma Blair through a degrading encounter with her resentful writing teacher (Robert Wisdom), while the more sprawling and scattershot "Non-Fiction" circles around the mutual exploitation of a fumbling documentary filmmaker (Paul Giamatti doing a near-parody of director Solondz) and his clueless subject, a suburban high school slacker named Scooby (Mark Webber). The squirmy laughs are laced with humiliation and the satire is acidic and cynical; in the world of Solondz, victims and victimizers alike are petty, selfish, vindictive, and thoughtless, and empathy is strictly rationed. Though sharply written and well directed, this misanthropic vision is strictly for daring filmgoers and Solondz fans. --Sean Axmaker

American Film Inst: Hollywood Mavericks

by Frederick Elmes

In 1975, while accepting his Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute, Orson Welles made a plea for the independent artists who made their art on the edges of Hollywood: "If there's any excuse for us, it's just that we're practicing the old American tradition of the maverick, and we are of a vanishing breed."The AFI celebrated Welles and his fellow mavericks in this 1990 portrait of 17 directors who defied, redefined, or simply worked around the system to create distinct films and unique cinematic visions. Ranging from pioneering filmmakers D.W. Griffith and Erich von Stroheim and classical era iconoclasts Josef von Sternberg and Sam Fuller to modern American independents Alan Rudolph and David Lynch, it's more of an overview and appreciation than an exploration--at a whirlwind 90 minutes, it can't offer more than sketches of its subjects. But it's an inspiring trip through Hollywood history, illustrated with rare interviews and well-chosen film clips (many of frustratingly poor quality) and guided by the commentary of film historians turned directors Martin Scorsese, Paul Schrader, and Peter Bogdanovich, among others. Other featured directors include John Ford, John Cassavetes, Sam Peckinpah, and Robert Altman. The film's writers, Todd McCarthy and Michael Henry Wilson, later shepherded two of the finest film documentaries ever made: McCarthy on Visions of Light and Wilson on A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Film. --Sean Axmaker
